Louisiana Window Tint Laws (2026): How Dark Can You Legally Tint?

Louisiana loosened its vehicle window tint law in 2025. If you are thinking about tinting a car, truck, or SUV in 2026, here is what is legal, what changed, and what happens if your tint is too dark.
Louisiana window tint limits at a glance
Act 143 took effect on August 1, 2025. Tint darkness is measured by VLT (visible light transmission), the percentage of light the window lets through. A lower number means darker tint.
- Front side windows: 25% VLT (previously 40%)
- Rear side windows: 25% VLT (unchanged)
- Back window: 12% VLT (unchanged)
- Windshield: tint is not allowed on most of the windshield
What changed in 2025?
The big change is the front side windows. Before Act 143, front driver and passenger windows had to let in at least 40% of light. Now they can go as dark as 25%, which matches the rear side windows. That means most drivers can run the same shade on all four side windows.
What are the fines for illegal tint in Louisiana?
Tint that is darker than the legal limit can get you a ticket. Fines are $150 for a first offense and $350 for a third or subsequent offense. The easiest way to avoid a ticket is to have a professional installer meter your film and stick to legal shades.
Can I get a medical exemption for darker tint?
Yes. Louisiana allows darker tint for drivers with a qualifying medical condition. You need a written explanation and diagnosis from a medical doctor or optometrist, approval from Louisiana State Police, and a special decal on your vehicle.
Does the tint law apply to homes and businesses?
No. These limits apply to vehicles. Residential and commercial window film is chosen for heat rejection, UV protection, glare control, and privacy, not legal VLT limits.
Which tint should I choose?
At 25% on the front and rear sides, both carbon and ceramic films give you a noticeably darker, cooler ride. Ceramic film rejects the most heat and blocks up to 99% of UV rays without interfering with phone, GPS, or radio signals, which makes it the most popular upgrade for Louisiana summers.
